Minimum Wage Increases and Vacancies

نویسندگان

چکیده

Using a unique data set and novel identification strategy we explore the effect of state-level minimum wage increases on firms' existing new vacancy postings. Utilizing occupation-specific county-level from Conference Board's Help Wanted Online for 2005-2018, show that lead to substantial declines in postings occupations with larger share workers earning around prevailing wage. Our estimate implies 10 percent increase binding reduces vacancies by 2.4 contemporaneously, could be as large 4.5 year later. The negative is more pronounced where generally have lower educational attainment (high school or less) those counties higher poverty rates.

The Spending and Debt Responses to Minimum Wage Increases;

This paper presents evidence that spending increases more than income, and thus debt rises, in households with minimum wage workers following a minimum wage hike. Furthermore, we show that the size, timing, persistence, and composition of spending is inconsistent with the basic certainty equivalent life cycle model as well as simple “rule of thumb” models where consumption is equal to a fractio...

Stagnation and minimum wage: Optimal minimum wage policy in macroeconomics

This paper argues how an increase in minimum wage affects employment, consumption, and social welfare with dynamic general equilibrium model without market frictions. The study demonstrates that a minimum wage hike reduces an actual unemployment rate and has positive effects on an employment rate under the demand-shortage economy whereas they do not under a non-demand shortage economy. The stud...

Wage Inequality, Minimum Wage Effects and Spillovers

This paper investigates possible spillover effects of the UK minimum wage. The halt in the growth in inequality in the lower half of the wage distribution (as measured by the 50:10 percentile ratio) since the mid 1990s, in contrast to the continued inequality growth in the upper half of the distribution, suggests the possibility of a minimum wage effect and spillover effects on wages above the ...

Underreporting and Minimum Wage

We propose a theory of firm that is consistent with empirically observed phenomenon of firms simultaneously engaging in both formal and informal activities. Firms face endogenous probability of auditing that depends on the scale of underreporting of both sales and wages. We characterize the conditions for a firm facing corporate, value added and payroll taxes to hide a part of its activities. U...

Minimum wage increases can lead to wage reductions by imperfectly competitive firms

In a model with imperfect competition and multiple equilibria we show how an increase in the minimum wage can lead firms to reduce wages (and employment). We find some empirical support for this in the Card–Krueger minimum wage data.
